Safeway Launches New Services for SNAP Customers
Online order and purchase, free curbside pickup, delivery highlight new initiatives to address food insecurity
Seattle, Wash. – January 6, 2022 – Food insecurity has risen to alarming rates across the country and Safeway is answering the challenge with new services and additional benefits for SNAP customers.
Today, Safeway is launching new online and in-store benefits for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients at all its stores in Washington state. This is the latest innovation in the company’s on-going efforts to ensure equity and access to food for those experiencing food insecurity. The new benefits also include enhancing existing state programs designed to provide healthy food options for SNAP customers.
“Food insecurity is a problem this nation can and should solve,” said Sara Osborne, Safeway’s Director of External Affairs. “Food banks can’t do it alone, and we think grocery stores are the cornerstone to solving this issue. One of the ways the grocery industry can help solve this problem is to make using SNAP more convenient, with tools to help them stretch their food budget. Our new services ensure Safeway SNAP customers have access to the same dignified shopping experience as everyone, whether that be on our eCommerce platforms or when shopping our stores.”
The new Safeway programs include easy payment for SNAP customers using their EBT cards, online ordering via Safeway.com, options for home delivery, and free DriveUp & Go™ services for easy pickup of groceries. SNAP users can also now access their online accounts to see their SNAP benefits, track eligible products while they shop, and see where their dollars are going.
Safeway also is doubling the benefits SNAP recipients receive from the State of Washington’s first-in-the-nation SNAP Produce Match program. When shoppers buy $10 of qualifying fruits and vegetables, they will now receive a coupon for $10 of free produce. This doubles the $5 incentive provided by the state.
“Safeway has long been an ally in helping fight food insecurity in Washington,” said David Bayne, Deputy Secretary of Strategic Partnerships at the Washington State Department of Health. “They have doubled our SNAP Produce Match benefit and provided SNAP customers online ordering and purchasing, pickup, and delivery options. These programs demonstrate Safeway’s willingness to come up with innovative solutions to food insecurity in our state.”
